Achilles: Triumphant Warrior through Brutality

His fierceness, the enormity of his armor, and his brutal hands were not enough to describe who Achilles, warrior of Acheaens and King Peleus and Thetis' son, is. He possesses god-like qualities, obviously seen in the story. A man longing for power and great glory and a man finding for revenge against Patroclus' death.

When he had the chance to attack, he eagerly chased Hector around the walls of Troy and run like a fastest creature, falcon. He wanted to prove how great he is. As he refused the pact given by Hector, it was proven that he's unmerciful to others. He believed that a mortal fight would be more favorable. Achilles stated that the agreement was like a faithful promise between men and lions (337-338.227).

He's not afraid to fight by his own convictions. He slaughter anyone in every way he wants. He fought against Trojans' great warrior, Hector. A brutal way of killing, unusual death of Hector and what he did to his corpse was noticed.

Achilles finished. Then on noble Hector’s corpse
he carried out a monstrous act. He cut through
the tendons behind both feet, from heel to ankle,
threaded them with ox-hide thongs, and then tied these
onto his chariot, leaving the head to drag behind.
he climbed up his chariot, brought on the splendid armour,
then lashed his horses. They sped off eagerly. (22.512-518.231)

He also yearn for his cousin's, Patroclus, death. He cared for him more than what he was supposed to be. Another reason why he fought against Hector.

Right now you’ll pay me back,
the full price of those sorrows I went
through when you slaughtered my companions.(22.351-353.227)

It's an honor for him to kill Hector. Thus, Achilles shows how brutal he is and his unmerciful acts against others. He shows no compassion and mercy to others. A warrior with strong personality and has his own convictions about life and death.

A Woman of Courage and Love

In history, women were always powerless and men were always have a superiority. Women were typically involved in tasks emphasizing child care and usually stay at their home. Wives were unable to work as they want to, instead, they were asked to take care of their child and do household chores.

As time goes by, this kind of role for women greatly changed. Ladies proved that they, too, can work and sustain their needs. We already instill in our mind that, a woman can also do what man can do. Woman have the courage to go overseas and find for possibilities of higher income. They already have the abilities of working difficult tasks and survive despite of the distance with family.

My Mom, a remarkable woman for me, has been portraying this kind of abilities. She left us, as I said in my first post, for a purpose and look for possibilities in Canada. I was in Grade 3 then, when I witnessed my Mom biding her goodbyes for us. In Canada, she worked hard as if there's no chance the other day. At a total of almost five years in Canada, I know that she got the courage and willingness to work for the family. She doesn't mind if she's a woman, it doesn't affect her. She even look for other opportunities even she already have a commitment.

Another thing I appreciate more is that she never let the gap between us made us feel that she doesn't love us. She always find a way to keep in touch with us. She make sure that she knows if everything is going right here. Her love is incomparable.

She's one of a kind. She knows how to handle everything within her family and friends. The fact that she was not able to finish her studies made her more admirable for me. She loves Dad more than I could imagine. She loves us more than others could imagine.

Women are aristocrats, and it is always the mother who makes us feel that we belong to the better sort.

For Our Intellectual Side

“The school where I learned to be a disciplined person, god-fearing individual, and of course, a studious one.”  – This would be the way I could tell you how Taytay United Methodist Christian School, or simply TUMCS, affected my life.

For so long, the school has been offering a high quality education to the students. TUMCS was known to be the best as it excels in such academic competitions and examinations. In the same manner, the school teaches discipline between youths and encourages each of them in serving God.

It was the reason why our parents trusted TUMCS in guiding and teaching us before we step into the reality of life. Our school helps us in developing our positive virtues and nourishing our spiritual side. Our intellectual side, eventually, would help us in having a successful life. Therefore, Let us be proud that we are once a fruit from TUMCS.

GRAMMAR: Realizing Its Importance

Practice, practice, practice writing. Writing is a craft that requires both talent and acquired skills. You learn by doing, by making mistakes and then seeing where you went wrong. - Jeffrey A. Carver
We were taught that the use of proper grammar  is always important in writing. Yes, we can't have the PERFECT GRAMMAR easily as we thought it could be. It can be learned, but effort must put forth to achieve having a good one.

I know that several of us have a poor writing skills, but after having the list of errors some of my classmates had in their previous posts, new set of correct grammar realizations has been observed. As our teacher gave the list, and I started to read between the lines, I knew right at that moment that having unfamiliar words or phrase doesn't always mean the correct grammar usage.

Our teacher discussed each sentences and enumerate all the grammatical errors of some. We found out that many of us still have problems in writing, especially in grammar. We had written sentences without checking or reading it again, and that would be the cause why we commit the same errors. Grammar errors may seem minuscule at first, but when the same errors continue to occur, we must take it upon ourselves to achieve a better and more thorough understanding to improve our writing. And so, I realized that grammar lies in the fact that there is more to it than making sure commas and apostrophes are in the right places, or that I have corrected misplaced modifiers or incorrect pronouns.

Having the knowledge of correct grammar could greatly affect our writings. When writing an article, for instance, we want to get the most remarkable details early to inform the reader why they should be reading about the main topic. If we use the correct words to explain what we're about say, it would help the readers to understand the whole article. A writing that feels and looks more professional would make it look better in the eyes of those who are reading the subject. It should not just look a combination of incomplete thoughts. Thus, having not-so-perfect grammar, flawlessness composition, and a good topic would gain attention from those who like to read. Articles would be read with much more clarity and succinctly.

To improve one's skills in writing, he should read books and apply every grammar lessons he had whenever he writes an article/essay. Books are good example of having correct grammar. Even after years of schooling where the rules of proper grammar are taught to us, there's always a tendency to forgot one rule. We should always have time to review all the rules in grammar. Communicating to others through English could also help us improve our grammar. Also, we should not forget to have our own dictionary during the time we write.

With that, I came up with the realization of the real importance of having a good grammar in writing. Grammar being the most important element of every writings.

One Vision: Winning A Fair Game

Teamwork is the ability to work as a group toward a common vision, even if that vision becomes extremely blurry. - Anonymous

Intramural, a busy week for all the students in TUMCS. Here, competitive guys were excited to join the games they liked to. Other students were preparing themselves to cheer, watch, and observed how each game was going to be played.
On the 14th of February, Seniors and some Juniors attended the Joint Worship to give thanks to the Lord for the school's another year.

The next day, students presented what dance they prepared. In our class, we have the Cheer dance Competition where we wore an unusual skirt. After the short time of practice, we knew that we performed a very good one. We had the determination to win this fight. And so, all the efforts were not wasted. We won. We know that we fought fairly and so the judges.

After Winning the Cheer dance Competition
On the third day of Intramural, the most awaited game, basketball, started. Players from our class prepared for the game and had their warm-up. As soon as the game begins, everyone was in their full focus on the game. Suddenly, "Go, Juniors!", "Go, Leah!", were just the words other people can hear. Cheers from supporters were unending. Even the audience were thrilled of how the play was going to end. Each of the players exhibited their willingness to get the recognition.

There were some instances that when a player had a foul, they would say that the referees were unfair. And when a score was not added, players would complain. That's a normal thing about games. Someone will always say that others were unfair.

Our class got two wins and one lose. They had the hard time decreasing the gap of their score with the other team's. Though we were not able to reach the Finals, we knew that the game was incredibly a good one. A game which made us stand up, jump, and clap at the same time.

On the other side, volleyball was also played. The players, having a hard time because of the sun, still continue to fight. Sad to say that we were not able to win in this game, though every players tried their best.

With the following events, each student was able to show sportsmanship, the importance of teamwork and the ability to accept defeats. As years passed, these virtues were still exhibited. Thus, the five days we had were not wasted, we were able to show something that will surely give Glory to God.

DISCRIMINATION: A Positive Insult or a Negative Abuse?

Discrimination has been a part of everyone's life, especially during youth times. It affects one's life either in positive or negative way depending on how a person reacts on it. If a person makes his experience of being discriminated to become a stronger person, he reacted positively. Once a person who has been discriminated let his whole life affected and be depressed all the time, then he reacted negatively.

Discrimination is a method of judging other's differences and also a way of hurting others, even unintentionally. It would gradually cause a person to be shy whenever he goes out, uneasy when he's with someone, and even be neglected by others. It's an awful thing that someone would point out all the bad or the not-so-good things with a person.

For me, discrimination could greatly affect a person's attitude afterwards. A child who experienced to be criticized can have a problem of dealing with others. He could have get the fear of being rejected or become depressed. There would be also a tendency that a discriminated person would just hide all his feelings of agony and sadness, knowing that he would just be rejected by others.

It's nice to know that I'd never experienced to be discriminated when I was young, even until now. As I see a discriminated person getting a low esteem and confidence, I always wanted to say to them that their life should go on and don't let it be affected.

I know sooner or later, I'll be discriminated by others too. In case of, I would just think that it's just a new burden or a new challenge God has given me to prove something I've got. Also, I would just pray for those who made me feel discriminated.

So, for those who experienced to be discriminated: SMILE! 'Cause you got something that makes you unique. Be GLAD! 'Cause others are focusing on you. THANK GOD! 'Cause you're born to be different.
